A propos State Lands

Forum

I’ve been a faithful reader of your weekly paper for a very great number of years, in fact, since the time I started my SC level studies.

I’m sorry to tell you that, as a former Minister of Housing and Lands, I take great exception to the fourth paragraph of your Editorial in Mauritius Times 20 September 2024, quote:

‘Readers may recall the allegations made by the then-Opposition against the PMSD and the so-called “Festival de la Terre.”

‘Similar accusations were directed at a former minister of Housing and Lands, whose relative allegedly sold lease rights over a plot of State land to Chinese investors with the minister’s approval.’

I verily and sincerely believe that this comment of yours may cause great prejudice to my good reputation as a former Minister of Housing and Lands. I would therefore appreciate, if you could in the name of Fairness and Justice, envisage a mise-au-point ‘pour remettre les pendules à l’heure.’

If you don’t want to reveal the name of that former Minister of Housing and Lands, at least, you could tell your readers under which government that minister served and during which period of time.

Kind regards,

Eliézer François JP
Leader MAM

Editor’s Note: We are not aware of any allegations against Mr Francois concerning state lands, unlike those directed at other politicians of various political affiliations. He can be assured that our editorial was not intended to target him in any manner.

An Appeal

Dear Reader

65 years ago Mauritius Times was founded with a resolve to fight for justice and fairness and the advancement of the public good. It has never deviated from this principle no matter how daunting the challenges and how costly the price it has had to pay at different times of our history.

With print journalism struggling to keep afloat due to falling advertising revenues and the wide availability of free sources of information, it is crucially important for the Mauritius Times to survive and prosper. We can only continue doing it with the support of our readers.

The best way you can support our efforts is to take a subscription or by making a recurring donation through a Standing Order to our non-profit Foundation.
Thank you.
