Outam K. Khoodeeram’s Journey from Telecom to WOW Pack Ltd

Mauritian Diaspora Success:

By Kishore Teelanah

The Mauritian diaspora in the United Kingdom consists of British citizens of Mauritian descent. Many migrated for a better life, while others arrived as students. The majority left Mauritius for the UK between the 1960s and 1970s, with a few arriving as early as the 1950s. Vacancies in the healthcare sector were a major attraction. Some arrived in the 1980s and later to pursue studies in various fields, while others took up different but equally important jobs. As more Mauritians settled in the UK, many married Mauritian partners, British nationals, and other Europeans.

This article highlights the inspiring journey of Outam Kumar Khoodeeram, who rose from humble beginnings to achieve remarkable success through hard work and determination. Outam was born and raised in Rivière des Creoles.

Career beginnings in Mauritius

Outam began his career in his twenties as a surveyor with Telecommunication India Ltd (TCIL), in collaboration with Mauritius Telecom, which undertakes major telecoms works across the country. He worked in various capacities as a surveyor in departments such as civil engineering, technical engineering, and optical fibre across the country.

Leveraging his friendly and business-oriented approach, he established his own technical support team, contracting with Africa Telecom. Furthermore, he opened a grocery shop (Mini Market), providing essential services for the town where he resided in Mauritius. Outam credits his father, Anirood Khoodeeram, and a key mentor for his success, citing his father’s dedication to charity as a major inspiration.

Move to the UK and Education

In 2003, Outam moved to the UK to pursue studies in Human Resources, successfully completing an Advanced Diploma. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to further his education with a Diploma in Business Management. He later studied part of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) program to widen his knowledge in business and finance.

Life in the UK was challenging, but Outam persevered by working multiple jobs to support his livelihood and education. He worked part-time as a Junior French Teacher at Guru Govind Khalsa College, which boosted his confidence before venturing into the hospitality industry.

Between 2005 and 2009, Outam served as a Manager at Welcome Break Limited at South Mimms Services (on the M25 Motorway). Later, he joined a Facilities Management Company (FMC), contributing to large-scale national events such as football, tennis, cricket, and golf tournaments. He worked as part of the Night Support Team, responsible for restocking provisions for these events.

Founding WOW Pack Ltd

With his extensive experience in catering and networking, Outam founded WOW Pack Ltd, specializing in logistics, accreditation, and packaging. He expanded his catering supply to a wide range of businesses, including Mauritian restaurants and takeaway services. His business also includes Mauritian takeaway options and provides support for community and charitable organizations. Since 2009, he has actively supported numerous Hindu and Mauritian charitable trusts with food packaging products.Outam Khoodeeram (Commercial Manager) at the CAT event, 2020

He is involved in importing and supplying catering disposables and food packaging products to retail, wholesale, and online e-commerce platforms. The success behind all this is credited to his hard work, consistency, and the support of friendly people from Dignified Partners, which is part of Outam’s business circle.

A Commitment to Sustainability

Regarding disposable food containers, there is growing concern about their increasing use and disposal. Outam’s company addresses this by supplying products made from bagasse — a natural byproduct of sugarcane fibre. These containers, commonly used at ceremonies, restaurants, and events serving hundreds of people, are sturdy, durable, and fully compostable, making them environmentally friendly, responsible, and practical.
