Poem
|International Day of Education
By Angkush Poonye
What does it take to go beyond just learning words and numbers?
Grasping knowledge relentlessly
Acquiring skills year after year
Keeping the zeal to be the cleverest
Defying the other meaning of education, sadly
Time to educate ourselves to live in peace and harmony
For the young soldiers at war
Resisting the chaos and rumbles
Refusing to be doomed by the burnt soil
Protecting their Motherland from the black ashes!
Time to educate ourselves to be more empathetic
For the chubby teenager bullying the skinny one
An energetic school compound enjoying the spectacle
For the seated youth staring at the standing pregnant lady
A talkative and moving bus going blank!
Time to educate ourselves to be more grateful
For the modern world at our fingertips
Yet refusing to go the extra mile
For our parents shielding us from social evils
Yet wandering away seems a better option for some!

An Appeal
Dear Reader
65 years ago Mauritius Times was founded with a resolve to fight for justice and fairness and the advancement of the public good. It has never deviated from this principle no matter how daunting the challenges and how costly the price it has had to pay at different times of our history.
With print journalism struggling to keep afloat due to falling advertising revenues and the wide availability of free sources of information, it is crucially important for the Mauritius Times to survive and prosper. We can only continue doing it with the support of our readers.
The best way you can support our efforts is to take a subscription or by making a recurring donation through a Standing Order to our non-profit Foundation.
Thank you.
