The Power of a Tap: MCB Juice Launches Next-Gen Mobile Payments

Corporate

The Mauritius Commercial Bank (MCB) is redefining the digital banking experience with the launch of Juice 5.0. This new version, a significant update to its popular mobile app, offers a streamlined design, enhanced security, and powerful new features for its 650,000 users. Most notably, Juice 5.0 marks the large-scale introduction of Juice Tap, a feature that allows all MasterCard Debit cardholders to make payments by simply tapping their mobile phones on a terminal.

This evolution is a testament to how MCB Juice has moved beyond a simple banking app to become an indispensable part of daily life for hundreds of thousands of Mauritians. As Stéphanie Ng Tseung, Head of Payments at MCB, says, “Juice mwa,” a Kreol phrase for “Juice me,” has become part of the local vocabulary, highlighting the app’s deep integration into the country’s social fabric.

A Smarter User Experience

The MCB Juice 5.0 app has been designed with a focus on simplicity and efficiency. Its Streamlined Navigation gives users a more logical flow from the login screen, offering clearer menus and quick-access shortcuts to frequently used features. For Enhanced Security, the newly renamed “Transact” section now uses facial recognition as a validation step for payments, providing an extra layer of protection. Finally, users have More Control over their finances, as the app no longer defaults to a specific account, giving them the freedom to choose which account to use for transactions. Additionally, credit card balances can now be viewed directly within the Accounts section.

Juice Tap: Turning Your Phone Into a Wallet

Juice 5.0’s flagship feature is Juice Tap, which utilizes Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. Now available to all Mastercard Debit cardholders, it allows users to make quick and secure contactless payments at any merchant equipped with a contactless terminal. This innovation transforms the mobile phone into a complete digital wallet, eliminating the need for cash or physical cards.

Shehryar Ali, Senior Vice President and Country Manager at Mastercard, praised the collaboration, stating, “This solution will further drive the adoption of cashless payments and allow our consumers to transact with confidence and ease.” This partnership, he adds, reflects Mastercard’s commitment to seamlessly integrating digital connectivity into the everyday lives of Mauritians.

The move to Juice Tap fits into MCB’s long-term strategy of building a robust digital payment ecosystem. As both Stéphanie Ng Tseung and Shehryar Ali noted in the latest “MCB Talk” podcast episode, “Building for the Future,” the pace of digital payment adoption is accelerating rapidly, and Juice Tap is positioned to meet this growing demand.

Since its launch in 2013, MCB Juice has consistently evolved to meet the changing needs of its users. From essential features like mobile-to-mobile payments and cardless withdrawals to its current state as a comprehensive digital wallet, the app has become a cornerstone of personal finance management in Mauritius.
