The NPCC’s National Leadership Engine (NLE) 2024 program concluded on a high note last week with its National Convention at the Institut Français de Maurice (IFM). The event brought together over 350 participants to celebrate the achievements of young Mauritian leaders and announce the winners of this sixth edition. The convention marked the successful culmination of a program designed to cultivate leadership skills and drive impactful community projects across the island.
The top honours were awarded to:
- Grand Winner: Feyaz Ecologik (Upper Plaines Wilhems)
- Second Winner: Bandes des Roles (Flacq)
- Third Winner: Heavy Roots (Moka)
The NLE 2024 introduced a significant change from previous years. It replaced traditional in-person training with a flexible, self-paced online curriculum for the initial phase. Participants who successfully completed the online course advanced to a three-day, non-residential bootcamp. This practical application phase led to the implementation of 30 community projects, which were then evaluated by regional assessors. From these, the top project from each of Mauritius’s ten regions was chosen for a final national assessment.
A Focus on Youth and National Development
The National Convention served as a crucial platform for key stakeholders to emphasize the importance of investing in young leaders. Dr Vinaye Ancharaz, Executive Director of the NPCC, spoke passionately about Mauritius’s “big dreams,” stating that every great historical change, from student movements to groundbreaking inventions, has been driven by the youth. He called on young people to “stand up, speak out, and work hard” to achieve these national aspirations.
This sentiment was echoed by NPCC Chairman, Mr Arshad Duymun, who highlighted the transformative power of youth in various fields, from technology and social justice to environmental sustainability. He emphasized that their “fresh perspectives, digital fluency and boundless energy drive progress,” and that initiatives like NLE ensure Mauritius not only keeps pace with global change but also leads it. Duymun directly linked investment in youth to a future shaped by productivity, creativity, and compassion.
Hon Aadil Ameer Meea, Minister of Industry, SMEs and Cooperatives, also addressed the young leaders. He affirmed that the NLE program “perfectly embodies” the nation’s commitment to fostering leaders who will boost national productivity. He noted that the program encourages “calculated risk-taking, fosters creative thinking and sharpens your ability to identify opportunities,” preparing the youth to launch new ventures that will contribute to the national economic dynamism.
NLE 2024 was organized by the NPCC in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports. The overarching goal was to create a pipeline of future leaders who can achieve higher productivity and improve the quality of life for the nation. The program empowered young people aged 16 and over from ten different regions, focusing on the development of both personal and social competencies through the conceptualization and implementation of impactful community-based projects in their localities.
