One has to admit that it is not easy to drive in India. I won’t go to the extent of asking Delhi drivers to drive in lanes as one high ranking diplomat posted at our High Commission in India did in 2008… However, an interesting fact is that despite what looks like a chaotic road situation, statistically there are relatively few incidents/accidents on the roads in India.

I once asked a Mauritian living in Delhi how he drives in this daily ‘chaotic’ road situation. His answer was that it’s more fun to drive in Delhi as all road users understand one another. I guess this is the prerequisite for safe driving anywhere in the world. In the UK, the way drivers should behave on the roads is legally enforced. A pedestrian, being more vulnerable than any other road users, is ‘king’ in the UK. Any vehicle has to slow down when nearing a zebra crossing and should always stop if there is any pedestrian waiting to use the zebra crossing. Similarly, in Singapore, a Mandatory Give-Way-to-Buses Scheme has been implemented.

Today, the number of vehicles on the road has increased considerably. However, our drivers have not adapted their driving accordingly. Nor do the drivers adapt their driving to the prevalent weather conditions. Who is to be held responsible for the way Mauritians drive? Is it the way the driving test is conducted? Is it the driving instructors who are not necessarily concerned into turning the learner into a safe driver?

In December, there was an accident in Vacoas involving two kids crossing the road on a zebra crossing when they were hit by a motorcyclist. The two kids were severely injured. The zone where the accident happened has a speed limit of 40 km. On top of that, they were on a zebra-crossing.
