Professor Vinesh Y. Hookoomsing, an academic, linguist, and writer whose career spanned higher education, public service, and cultural advocacy, passed away this week. His work made lasting contributions to language policy, education, and cultural identity in Mauritius and the wider Indian Ocean region.<\/span><\/p>\n

After earning his PhD in Linguistics from Universit\u00e9 Laval in Quebec, Canada, Dr Hookoomsing joined the University of Mauritius as an Associate Professor on 3 September 1990. He was promoted to Professor on 1 July 1995. During his tenure, he held key administrative roles, serving as Dean of the Faculty of Social Studies and Humanities from September 1994 to August 1997, and later as Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Consultancy from February 2001 to February 2006. In these positions, he supported institutional research and mentored students and junior colleagues across multiple disciplines.<\/span><\/p>\n

A central focus of Dr Hookoomsing\u2019s career was the study, development, and formal recognition of Kreol. He was closely involved in the efforts that led to Grafi-larmoni in 2004, the harmonized writing system that provided a standardized orthography for the language. As the founding President of the Akademi Kreol Morisien, he advocated for the structured integration of Mauritian Creole into the education system and public discourse, viewing language recognition as an important element of social cohesion.<\/span><\/p>\n

Beyond his university appointments, Dr Hookoomsing engaged regularly with the broader public. For many years, he contributed articles to the Mauritius Times<\/em>, writing on language, education, history, and social affairs. His work frequently examined Mauritius’s position within the Indian Ocean, exploring cultural and historical connections across the region. In recognition of his service to education, he was appointed Grand Officer of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean (GOSK) in 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n

Colleagues and students noted his measured approach to public debate, his intellectual curiosity, and his willingness to share knowledge. He maintained a calm, reflective style in both academic and public discussions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prof Hookoomsing retired from the University of Mauritius on 25 May 2008. His contributions to Mauritian linguistics, education, and public commentary remain a significant part of the island\u2019s intellectual record.<\/span><\/p>\n

Through his commitment to dialogue and scholarship, Prof Hookoomsing leaves behind a profound legacy. He will be remembered by all whose lives and intellects he touched.<\/span><\/p>\n
