Antoine Domingue, Senior Counsel (SC), has been elected President of the Mauritius Bar Association (MBA) for an unprecedented third term. Following elections held on Thursday, he succeeds Me Anwar Moollan, SC, at the helm of the Bar Council.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Bar Council will also comprise Yatin Varma, Bisham Ramdenee, Natasha Behary-Panray, Priscilla Balgobin-Bhoyrul, Zaki Ramtoolah, and Hisham Oozeer. <\/span><\/p>\n

Antoine Domingue is regarded as a respected and experienced legal practitioner in the country. As a Senior Counsel, his career has been defined by a strong commitment to the rule of law and judicial independence.<\/span><\/p>\n

His previous tenures as President were marked by high-stakes advocacy. Most notably, in 2015, he resigned in protest over government legislation he deemed a threat to the profession\u2019s independence, only to be re-elected shortly thereafter — a testament to the trust his peers place in his leadership.<\/span><\/p>\n

Leadership for a Complex Era<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Antoine Domingue\u2019s return to the presidency comes at a pivotal time for the Mauritian justice system. He has recently been a vocal critic of what he describes as \u201cinstitutional instability\u201d and was a key legal commentator during the \u201cMissi\u00e9 Moustass\u201d wiretapping scandal in late 2024, warning of serious implications for national security and privacy rights.<\/span><\/p>\n

Beyond his courtroom work, Me Domingue is a proponent of constitutional integrity, frequently commenting on the separation of powers and fundamental rights. He also advocates social responsibility within the profession, encouraging successful barristers to engage in pro bono work to serve the wider community. His expertise in regulatory oversight and administrative law is further reflected in his 2025 appointment as Chairman of the Utility Regulatory Board (URB).<\/span><\/p>\n
