This new development, guided by the blessings and visionary leadership of His Holiness Jagadguru Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Mahaswamiji, President of JSS Mahavidyapeetha (JSSMVP) and Chancellor, signals a transformative moment for both the institution and Mauritius’s standing as a regional education hub.

The accreditation of the MBBS Programme by the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Mauritius, represents far more than a regulatory approval; it is the concrete realisation of JSSMVP’s global mission. As one of India’s largest educational trusts, JSSMVP commands a vast network of over 360 institutions worldwide. The establishment of the JSS School of Medicine is the latest, and perhaps most ambitious, expansion in its international journey, which already spans India, Dubai, and the United States. Its core philosophy — to provide quality, affordable, and globally relevant higher education — has now been applied directly to the critical field of medical science in the heart of the Indian Ocean.

A Legacy Built on Excellence

JSS Academy’s commitment to Mauritius is deep-rooted. Established in 2002, the campus was the first private higher education institution in the country to offer engineering programmes, quickly building a reputation for academic rigour. Managing the Academy under the aegis of JSSMVP, the JSS Education Foundation Pvt. Ltd., Mysuru, has consistently championed the vision of accessible, high-standard education for the global community.

The institution cemented its commitment to excellence in 2018 with the establishment of JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research, Mauritius (JSSAHERM), culminating in the award of degree-awarding powers in 2020. Located on a 8-acre campus in Bonne Terre, Vacoas, the Academy features a 150,000 sq. ft. built-up area comprising state-of-the-art classrooms, advanced laboratories, workshops, and residential facilities. This infrastructure meets stringent international academic and regulatory standards, laying a robust physical foundation for the new School of Medicine.

The academic foundation of the Mauritian MBBS programme is mentored by the highly-regarded JSS Medical College, Mysuru, India. As a top-ranked institution within the JSSMVP network, the mentor college provides decades of experience in competency-based, research-driven medical education.

Crucially, the MBBS curriculum at JSSAHERM has been meticulously designed to align with the standards of the National Medical Commission (NMC), India. This deliberate alignment ensures equivalence and familiarity for Indian and international students. This commitment positions JSSAHERM graduates for practice on the global stage.

Perhaps the most crucial component of the new programme is the clinical training provision. The Ministry of Health and Wellness has officially allocated access to SSRN Hospital, five regional hospitals, and several primary healthcare centres for student training. This network provides over 600 beds for clinical exposure, ensuring students encounter a comprehensive spectrum of high-quality patient care environments across the Mauritian public health system.

A Game-Changer for Regional Development

The launch of the MBBS programme is poised to be a game-changer for higher education and healthcare in Mauritius: it will Expand Healthcare Capacity by developing a new generation of local and global medical professionals to address human capital shortages; it will Boost the Education Economy by attracting a significant influx of international students, enhancing Mauritius’s economic diversity; it will Bridge Cultural and Academic Gaps by offering a pathway for Indian students to pursue NMC-aligned medical studies in a culturally familiar, world-class international setting; and it will Foster Innovation by stimulating advanced research, education, and innovation in clinical service delivery within the Indian Ocean region.

With admissions for the first batch of MBBS students anticipated to commence in November 2025, JSSAHERM is setting a course to become a globally benchmarked medical education centre.

Mauritius Times ePaper Friday 17 October 2025

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[21
56687,56692,56688,56694,56695,56686,56693,56683,866,56690,56680,56682,119,56681,44450,56691,56685,24624,1509,56689,56684
post-44632","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-education","tag-academic-rigor","tag-clinical-training","tag-degree-awarding-powers","tag-education-economy","tag-foster-innovation","tag-global-mission","tag-healthcare-capacity","tag-hec","tag-indian-ocean","tag-jss-medical-college","tag-jssaherm","tag-jssmvp","tag-mauritius","tag-mbbs-programme","tag-medical-science","tag-nmc","tag-regional-education-hub","tag-school-of-medicine","tag-ssrn-hospital","tag-state-of-the-art","tag-transformative-moment

https://i0.wp.com/www.mauritiustimes.com/mt/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/JSS-Academy.jpg?fit=1200%2C784&ssl=1
["GET
