Traditional Cure for Covid-19

Forum

There is so much contradictory literature in circulation on the Covid-19 virus and its cure that the reader is left utterly confused.

I learnt one piece of wisdom from an Indian Imam officiating in my village mosque. He remarked that Mauritians go to see the doctor for any minor ailment which Indians cure at home. I immediately thought of my childhood days when traditional cure was used successfully to relieve headache, fever, diarrhea, cough, etc.

The messages flooding the social media mention, among other things, getting rid of Covid-19 by drinking a hot liquid, or inhaling steam from a mixture of water and eucalyptus, ginger and/or cloves, or consuming ginger and curcumin. Furthermore a room can be made Covid-free if sliced onions are randomly scattered around.

What if these are tried and tested methods? What if a controlled group from those in quarantine is given those remedies? There are two possible outcomes: either the person giving them will be made a laughing stock of in case of failure, or in case of success, he will be a hero.

The “white coat” syndrome is so deeply ingrained that the vast majority of readers will call me mad. Those who are desperate will try the cures. I can remember having been made a laughing stock of even when, with the help of an alternative medicine practitioner, some patients suffering from an ailment considered “incurable” by the MAYO Institute were miraculously cured.

An Appeal

Dear Reader

65 years ago Mauritius Times was founded with a resolve to fight for justice and fairness and the advancement of the public good. It has never deviated from this principle no matter how daunting the challenges and how costly the price it has had to pay at different times of our history.

With print journalism struggling to keep afloat due to falling advertising revenues and the wide availability of free sources of information, it is crucially important for the Mauritius Times to survive and prosper. We can only continue doing it with the support of our readers.

The best way you can support our efforts is to take a subscription or by making a recurring donation through a Standing Order to our non-profit Foundation.
Thank you.
