Looking back
On the occasion of the National Day of Mauritius the Dean of Wesminster Abbey has for some years organised Evensong to pray for the people of Mauritius and its leaders.
The congregations have always been invited to ask God to guide the leaders of Mauritius to lead with honesty and integrity. How fruitful have the prayers been? What is coming to light now demonstrates that the prayers have never been heard.
This year I made the journey to London to attend the Evensong. Always an optimist, I prayed for those in government now. Those who are honest,,sincere, humble and can show some rectitude really do not need others to ask God to guide their behaviourand responses.
In 2012 I was in Mauritius for Maha Shivaratri. One senior politician and his wife gave a good stage-managed display of their devotion to Lord Shiva — all for the benefit of their co-religionists.
From our Hindu scriptures we learn that Dharma is the path of righteousness. Will the politicians take note and govern with some honesty, sincerity, integrity and humility ? This expatriate will keep praying.
