Farewell Nightingale of Mauritius

Obituary

A giant of the Mauritian cultural scene has left us. Meera Mohun, a household name in our country, was a precocious talent. At 8, she sang bhajans and kirtans at ‘satsangs’. A year shy of 16, she participated in a competition organised by the national broadcasting corporation. Participation in shows during the 1970s would increase her popularity greatly.

During a career that spanned almost half a century, Meera Mohun showcased her singing talents at regional and international levels. In 1995, she was the first Mauritian artist to be part of the ‘Traditional Odyssey’; in 1998 she participated in the prestigious Angoulême festival, and in 2005 she conquered a younger audience with her duo with Dominique Barret and their hit “Mon Coeur Epris”. Meera was the President of Mauritian Society of Authors between 2012 and 2014.

In 1976, she joined Nalanda bookshop where she worked for three decades. This passion for reading is ultimately what led to the launch of her bookstore ‘Book World’ in 2007. Meera Mohun also took a special interest in spirituality and was a voracious reader. Works by Paramhansa Yogananda, namely ‘Autobiography of a yogi’, ‘Man’s Eternal Quest’, ‘Journey to Self-realisation’ and ‘Destiny of soul’ were among her favourites.

Meera’s music was about love and respect. She practised what she preached and was involved in community projects among which one that encouraged reading in Mont Roches.

Meera Mohun was born in Tranquebar in 1957 and passed away on the 16th of March 2022.

Our deepest condolences to her close ones.

An Appeal

Dear Reader

65 years ago Mauritius Times was founded with a resolve to fight for justice and fairness and the advancement of the public good. It has never deviated from this principle no matter how daunting the challenges and how costly the price it has had to pay at different times of our history.

With print journalism struggling to keep afloat due to falling advertising revenues and the wide availability of free sources of information, it is crucially important for the Mauritius Times to survive and prosper. We can only continue doing it with the support of our readers.

The best way you can support our efforts is to take a subscription or by making a recurring donation through a Standing Order to our non-profit Foundation.
Thank you.
