Chagos: Where Might is Right

When will Britain take the “Positive Attitude to Right the Wrongs”?

The following excerpt from exchanges which took place, on Wednesday 15 May 13, in the House of Lords in Britain shows that there are certain sensible persons over there who reckon that injustice has been done by excising Chagos from Mauritius before independence and re-branding the islanders as “contract workers”. As it is known, Britain has kept refusing the return of the Chagos Islanders to their motherland while postponing sine die the return of the territory to Mauritius to which it rightfully belongs. The British governments have used all sorts of subterfuges to carry on their shameful occupation of our territory in Chagos. Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act

Tracking of persons having got into vast amounts of unlawfully gained wealth has long been a social concern. In 1963 in Britain, the train called Royal Mail was despoiled of £2.6 million (equivalent to £41 million today). The act was so daring and spectacular that it became known as ‘The Great Train Robbery’. The thieves involved in this case escaped and the stolen money was thereafter untraceable. A concern arose that even if a thief were seized and sentenced to several years in jail, he would still be able to serve his term in prison and quietly enjoy the fruits of his mischief thereafter.

These images are at least a thousand years old. They are as popular today as they were then. So what do they say about Indian society? Patriarchal? Matriarchal? Gender-sensitive? All of the above? None of the above?

Of Old Age and the Elderly

I was in my yoga class last week that the subject of old age and Homes crept up and being the eldest, I added a few words. Nowadays, a lot of elderly people have to spend the rest of their days in Homes despite having children here. Most daughters and daughters-in-law are working fulltime and they just don’t have the time for their old folks.
